A little while ago I came across a TEDx Talks video called How DO YOU Define Yourself. Not knowing what to expect I opened the video and was amazed at what followed next. The face was a familiar face I’ve seen around the internet, scattered in various YouTube videos. The familiar face was that of Lizzie Velasquez.
Lizzie was born with a rare condition that only 2 other people in the world has. This condition is so rare that there is no explanation as to what it is except the fact that it inhibits the person carrying the condition from ever gaining weight. At the age of 25, Lizzie has never weighed more than 64 pounds she says.
What really pulled me in was her story, and how she battled to not let her rare condition define her. Though she’s been labeled “The World’s Ugliest Woman”, though people told her to kill herself, though she was bullied through out school, she decided to use the negativity and turn it into something very positive. She’s written two books and will soon have a third. She’s graduated post secondary school and has a blossoming career as a speaker.
Listening to Lizzie Velasquez’s story reminded me of the fact that we all have a story, and our story matters. We all have struggles and hardships, some more than others, but we should not let what others think about us define who we ultimately are/become. We must get to the point where we all can ask ourselves the question “What Defines Me?” and have an answer for it.
What defines you? Is it friends, money, sports? What you ultimately decide should be much greater than yourself. Strive to do good, strive to give back to the less fortunate, strive to make your part of the world a better place. And remember, you are beautiful in your own unique ways, and God loves you on a level so deep that no person could ever remove that.
Watch through the video and listen to Lizzie Velasquez’s story. Share this post with others, as we all see to inspire positive change in the life of others. Leave your comments below.
