What to do to weather the storm!
It’s that time of year, when the feel good vibe of summer is a nothing but a memory. However, summertime has proven to be more than just a season for people to look forward to for vacation. In recent years, summertime seems to be the opposite. It’s as if the energy of the bright sun transferred into hyper productivity of many people I know. Personally, my team and I were able to get many things on our long awaited “to-do list” crossed off. I’ve even met people who started businesses or a new hobby over the summer “break” which are inspiring! But as the sun gets dimmer, the leaves get browner the air get crisp, and the city begin to hibernate, how do we stay motivated? The blizzard is coming, in more ways than just snow outside your window.
I’m sure I’m not the only one beginning to feel the winter blues a bit early. We’ve all been there. There are times when you’re motivated to accomplish your wildest dreams, or get through that list of goals that steer our path. But like the seasons we go through bright and shiny highs as well as cold and bitter lows that can take us off course. Well, I’m going to give you 3 things that can help you stay focused and stay on track though this blizzard.
1 KEEP WARM AROUND SUPPORTIVE AND LIKE-MINDED FRIENDS
I’m sure most of us have heard the saying “show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are”. At least in my experience, that’s probably one of the truest statements, ever. The people you surround yourself with can be a direct influence on how good or how bad you do. Find people who also are successful and are pushing for their goals just as much, if not more than you. That way will be constantly reminded of your goals and dreams.
2 FIND A PARTNER WHO WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE
Probably one of the most important things. I’ve come to the realization that people need people. So find someone who your close with and can trust. When you’re with someone always remember that you a unit, a team. So don’t be afraid to share your vision or goals with them over a nice cup of hot cocoa and if they care about you then they will hold you accountable. A good exercise is to set deadlines for the things you have to get done, write it down, and share it with your partner. That way, they’ll be able to follow up with you on your progress.
3 LEARN TO BE SELF-MOTIVATED
Being able to depend on people is great, nothing wrong with it. However, we also have to learn to be independent. So start by doing your own research. There are different things that help motivate people, for some it is exercising, for others it’s listening to their favourite music. Find what gets you hyped and incorporate it in your lifestyle. And if you’re having a hard time peeling yourself off the couch, do a fun winter activity that will get that adrenaline rushing like tobogganing with friends and family. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed and take a break but learning how to pick yourself up is the most important thing. I know sometimes when chasing our dreams, we give and give so much to the world. But self-care is the most important rejuvenator. Don’t be ashamed to take time in yourself and refocus. This will help your mind to begin to create positive habits in the times where you’re in a cold state of mind.
Winter can sometimes slow us down not only physically but also mentally. As the year-end draws near we tend to slow down with our goals and dreams, but who says we have to. Keep pushing through those hard times and you’ll end the end of year finish line on top. Keep pushing and I’ll see you on the other side!
